IslamExpo will be setting the stage for a range of high profile exhibits, displays and figures to ‘strut their stuff’ from 6th to 9th July at Alexandra Palace in London this year.
The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts (PSTA) specialise in the teaching of visual Islamic and traditional arts and designs. Works from students in their two year MA courses at the School will be on display in the Art Wing at the event. They are also designing and producing graphics and banners to be used in The Knowledge Zone and the Time Line. One of the aims of the PSTA is to further contact with Muslim communities to help younger people to re-discover and re-assess their own cultural heritage within modern-day Britain.
Rt. Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London and Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, are all participating in a seminar covering the topic 'Multiculturalism and the 2012 Games’.
One of the longest pieces of calligraphy in the world, stretching over approximately 11 meters will be displayed at IslamExpo. Calligraphers from China, Syria, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine and Iraq will be exhibiting their work as well.
The latest work of world class photographer Peter Sanders’ is currently touring the Middle East and will be exhibited for the first time in the UK at IslamExpo. The exhibit is called “The Art of Integration: Islam…In Britain’s Green and Pleasant Land”. Peter’s collection “In the Shade of the Tree” based on the last thirty years of his travels around the Muslim world will also be on display.
Renowned thinkers, politicians, journalists and authors have also confirmed that they will take part in a series of panel discussions and debates covering a wide range of hot topics. They include John Esposito, the most prominent contemporary American scholar of Islam, Wadah Khanfar the managing director of Al Jazeera satellite network, Guardian columnists Jonathan Freedland and Madeleine Bunting, Yvonne Ridley – journalist, author, peace activist and television presenter for the Islam Channel, Lord Nazir Ahmed and Labour MP – Sadiq Khan to mention a few.
The Global Village at IslamExpo will include the embassies from countries like Sudan, Indonesia, Syria, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
A large number of schools from various Boroughs in London will be attending IslamExpo on educational tours. Students can explore Islamic culture, history and innovation which will also complement the National Curriculum subjects of art and drama.
Other attractions during this 4-day event include performances by the award-winning production company Khayaal of their Souk Stories collection, a walk-through experience taking visitors on a journey in time through Islamic history, and a film festival, featuring “Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet” and “The Message”.
IslamExpo is supported by the Mayor of London, the Muslim Council of Britain, the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe, the Muslim Association of Britain, and a range of other institutions which include the Qatari National Council for Culture and Heritage, as well as a number of international media organisations.
